Is Maoam Vegan?

Maoam, a beloved confectionery brand originating in Germany, has been bringing joy to sweet-lovers with their colourful and flavourful chewy treats since 1930. Known for their vibrant packaging and playful marketing, Maoam (owned by Haribo) has become a household name in many countries, including the UK. However, you may be wondering if these popular sweets are suitable for vegans.

Are Maoam Vegan Friendly?

Unfortunately for those following a vegan lifestyle, Maoam sweets are not considered vegan. The primary reason is that they contain gelatine, an animal-derived ingredient commonly used to create the chewy texture found in gummy sweets. Gelatine is made from boiling the bones, skin, and connective tissue of animals, typically pigs or cows. As such, it is obviously not suitable for vegans or those who adhere to a strict plant-based diet.

Aside from gelatine, Maoam sweets also contain beeswax and invert sugar syrup, both of which can be problematic for vegans. Beeswax is used as a glazing agent to give the sweets their shiny appearance. It is a product of bees, and while some vegetarians may consider it acceptable, it is not considered vegan as it is an animal byproduct. Invert sugar syrup, on the other hand, is often made from sugar cane or sugar beet, but it can occasionally be derived from honey.
